How to Brew Coffee the French Press Way

Tired of stale over-roasted coffee from the local coffee shop? I won't mention any names here, but one popular shop has just such coffee. A lot of people love it, but a lot of people have never tried real coffee brewed in a French Press before. I will give you the step-by-step process here. You only need to spend a small amount of money.

I am a coffee fanatic. I've been drinking coffee since I was about 12 years old and I actually roast my own coffee at home. Now, we will not get into that here, but I do recommend you go out and purchase a couple of things. First, some quality roasted beans. Either acquire them online and have them delivered to you, or go to a grocery store like Whole Foods and buy some beans there.

Also get a hold of a grinder. Again, I could write a whole article on grinders so that won't be discussed in depth here, but buy the best one you can afford. If the best you can afford is the whirly blade kind for $15 that's fine.

You also need a French Press. These are quite inexpensive, and you can find them just about anywhere (discount stores, close-out stores, department stores, coffee shops, etc).

Here are the steps to a perfect cup of coffee.

You will need 1 coffee scoop (2 tablespoons) of coffee per 8 to 10 ounces of water. Based on this, boil the amount of water you wish to use. In the meantime, grind your coffee to a fine grind (not coarse as many people will tell you to do) and place this into your glass beaker (glass part of the French Press). Once your water is boiling, remove it from the stove and let it sit for 1 minute. This is important to assure your water is at the correct temperature. After 1 minute, pour the water into the beaker over the ground coffee. Replace the plunger but don't push it down, just leave it above the level of the water at this time.

Set your timer for 3 minutes.

After 1 minute, swirl the coffee around to ensure all grounds are covered.

When about 20 seconds remain, start pressing the plunger down slowly. Press all the way down.

Pour and enjoy! If you have used good quality coffee and good water (spring water is best, distilled water is worst), you should be enjoying one of the best cups of coffee you have ever tried.
