Free Things To Do In And Around Boston

Boston isn't only about the Red Sox! If you are planning a trip to this neat city here are some free things to do.

The Boston University Astronomy Department has Public Open Night at the Observatory most Wednesday nights, weather permitting. It is open to everyone and is great fun to look at the sky through telescopes and binoculars while learning a little about astronomy at the same time. The program lasts for about 1 hour.

Stroll Boston's most enchanting street, Newbury Street. A shopper's paradise, and for the budget-minded, a people-watching and window-shopping paradise. Eight blocks filled with shops, boutiques, salons, and quaint restaurants. There is something for everyone here.

For the book lover (that's me!), don't miss the Harvard Book Store, a Harvard Square landmark founded in 1932 where visitors from all over the world can browse a comprehensive selection of new, used, and bargain books. This is a very unique and special place to shop, and don't forget to check out their calendar of events. You will find discussions by Pulitzer-prize-winning journalists, best-selling authors (and brand new authors too), New York Times reporters, law professors, poets, and all manner of interesting people who will happily share their knowledge. This is truly a must-see on your list.

During the week, you can find many museums in the city with free admission. Check the individual museum you are interested in to see what their hours are.

Interested in art? Visit one of the many art galleries located on Newbury Street.

Visit the Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown. Admission is free, so a great thing to put on your list. This monument is made entirely of granite, is 221 feet tall, and has 294 steps. Climb up these steps to the top and find a magnificent view of the Boston skyline. As an added bonus, you will work off so many calories you can have dessert with lunch without a bit of guilt!

Tour the Boston Public Library which features movies, workshops, lectures, art exhibits, and much more.

Browse Haymarket, Boston's great outdoor market.

In the mood for a stroll? Take a walk at Castle Island, where you will find Fort Independence. Both of these places are on the state and national Registers of Historic Places, and the fort is a National Historic Landmark. You can take a tour or just meander around and enjoy the sights.
