A Trip to Orlando, Florida - Beyond The Theme Parks
Almost anyone who thinks of vacationing in Orlando, Florida, is thinking of Disney World or one of the other theme parks. But Central Florida has much more to offer than this, and if you are looking for ideas, here are a few ideas for activities that won't cost you anything at all! If you and your family are interested in art, take a tour of the Grand Bohemian Gallery located downtown. You will find contemporary art glass, jewelry, and paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries. Interested in glassblowing? It would be worth your time to visit Keila Glassworks Gallery in the historic Dr. Phillips building. You can see beautiful hand blown glass by Charles Keila. They also offer glassblowing classes. Take a stroll down the streets of Celebration, a town conceived by Disney, which is a blend of historically themed architecture and modern technology. Just outside of Orlando in Lake Wales you can visit Legend of Spook Hill where you can park your car, put it in neutral, and watch as your car amazingly rolls uphill! You can visit the downtown library which conducts children's storytelling and other events weekly. While you're in the area, take a walk around lake Eola. For something you don't see every day, the Peabody Orlando Hotel on International Drive has the famous march of the Peabody ducks twice a day. The ducks are escorted along a red carpet to the Royal Duck Fountain. Sometimes kids are allowed to be an honorary duck master for one of the shows. Great fun for the family. Located just on the outskirts of Orlando is Flea World and Fun World which have almost 2000 vendors selling items at bargain prices. Or just go and people watch. This is a huge place, the largest flea market in the country. Keep these ideas in mind for your next Central Florida vacation, and get away from the theme parks for a while. |
